MOROCCO

FES -------- Tanneries---------- The tanneries of Fes must support one of the oldest forms of human endeavour. Using primitive techniques to prepare the hides to be transformed into leather, many workers spend hour upon hour standing knee deep in the most foul concoctions used to cure and otherwise prepare the skins. The formal tannery precincts can appear colourful and picturesque when viewed from the surrounding rooftop shops made available to tourists for sightseeing (and later encouaged to buy leathergoods). But a short walk around to the "other side" of the river (drain?) reveals a "garbage tip" scenario of background work that is performed as part of the tannery process.
