SFG has
consistently maintained that alternative methods of restoring
and preserving Sandringham Foreshore and beaches are preferable
and more environmentally sound than the method currently employed,
that relies on stone groynes.
Following
are some examples of gentler and more effective
alternatives to stone groynes. These methods are generally much
more aesthetically pleasing, which should be a high priority
despite other factors. They are also more flexible in the way
they may be implemented and can be easily modified or "tuned"
after installation if deemed desirable. Cost wise they represent
a saving compared to stone groynes which should appeal to government
budgets. In view of these facts it is imperative that the government,
through DSE, consider removing both stone groynes and
as a minimum, consider trialling some of these alternatives,
before our foreshore and beaches are permanently and irreversibly
destroyed.
