Alternative Methods

Natural Reefs
Natural reef outcrops, as illustrated below, work well in holding natural beachscapes together. This natural rock and reef system, only several hundred metres north of Southey Street groyne is gently effective in contributing to the beach integrity without being in any way visually intrusive. It also helps support marine life. In fact its visual qualities are exactly what artists and photographers consciously seek.

This small but natural reef abutting aheadland just south of the rotunda at Sandringham creates a natural and effective protection for the adjoining beach. An added benefit is the opportunity for beachgoers to wade through the shallows and observe marine life in a natural environment.

Artificial rock outcrops are used in a diversity of beach scenarios throughout Australia to stabilize threatened beaches. They are very effective and blend in well with local aesthetics, which is always an important consideration in scenic locations.
